Dental crowns are recommended when a tooth is significantly weakened by decay, cracked or fractured, worn down from grinding, has a large filling that compromises its structure, or needs protection after root canal therapy. A crown essentially becomes the new outer surface of your tooth, providing full coverage and long-term protection.

Our CEREC same-day crown technology eliminates the need for temporary crowns and second appointments. Using a digital intraoral scanner, Dr. Chireau captures a precise 3D image of your tooth — no uncomfortable impression trays. The crown is designed on screen using advanced CAD software, then milled from a solid block of ceramic right in our office. The entire process takes approximately two hours.

For cases that benefit from lab fabrication, we work with premium dental laboratories to create crowns from materials including all-ceramic (e.max), zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Lab-crafted crowns may be preferred for complex cases, large bridges, or when maximum strength is needed for back teeth under heavy bite forces.

Material selection matters. All-ceramic crowns like e.max offer the most natural appearance and are ideal for front teeth. Zirconia crowns provide exceptional strength for back teeth. Dr. Chireau will recommend the best material based on the tooth's location, your bite forces, and aesthetic goals.

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental visits, dental crowns typically last 10 to 20 years. Some crowns last a lifetime. The key to longevity is treating your crown like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss around the crown margin, and avoid using your teeth as tools.
