Root canal therapy has an undeserved reputation for being painful, but modern techniques have made it a comfortable procedure that relieves pain rather than causing it. The inside of each tooth contains soft tissue called pulp, which includes nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscess formation. Root canal therapy removes the infected pulp, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and allows you to keep your natural tooth.

Symptoms that may indicate you need a root canal include severe tooth pain, prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold, darkening of the tooth, swelling or tenderness in nearby gums, and a persistent pimple on the gums. However, some infected teeth cause no symptoms at all, which is why regular dental exams are important for detecting problems early.

During root canal treatment, we first numb the area completely so you won't feel pain during the procedure. We then create a small opening in the tooth to access the pulp chamber, remove the infected tissue, clean and shape the root canals, and seal them with a biocompatible material. Most root canals are completed in one or two visits.

After root canal therapy, your tooth will need a crown to protect it and restore full function. Teeth that have had root canals become more brittle over time, and a crown provides necessary strength and protection.
