Dental Bridges to Replace Missing Teeth

Missing teeth do more than affect your appearance. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding teeth gradually shift toward the gap, changing your bite and making teeth harder to clean. The jawbone beneath the missing tooth begins to deteriorate. Over time, these changes can lead to further tooth loss, TMJ problems, and facial changes. A dental bridge addresses these concerns by filling the space promptly.

Traditional bridges are the most common type. They consist of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) held in place by dental crowns cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap. These anchor teeth are called abutments. The entire bridge is fabricated as a single piece for maximum strength and stability.

Implant-supported bridges are an excellent option when multiple adjacent teeth are missing or when the teeth next to the gap are healthy and you prefer not to crown them. Instead of anchoring to natural teeth, the bridge attaches to dental implants placed in the jawbone. This option also helps preserve bone density at the implant sites.

The bridge process typically requires two appointments. At the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared, digital or traditional impressions are taken, and a temporary bridge is placed. At the second visit approximately two weeks later, the permanent bridge is cemented. We ensure the fit, bite, and color are perfect before final placement.

Modern bridges are crafted from premium materials including all-ceramic, zirconia, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. Material choice depends on the bridge's location in your mouth, aesthetic requirements, and bite forces. With proper care — brushing, flossing under the bridge with a floss threader, and regular dental visits — a bridge can last 10 to 15 years or longer.
